Managing Director

“A key strength at Tecbuild is our capacity to offer development and engineering assistance to customers. Timber framed structures, particularly multi-storey residential, are experiencing a renaissance as they been demonstrated to offer significant cost and time savings over concrete. Taking advantage of these benefits however requires a coordinated project approach. We can assist developers and builders to get the best outcomes.”

With a 35 year professional history in development, construction and design, it was on one of his own residential developments that Jack first discovered Tecbeam. With existing pre-sales and a construction tender result way over budget, Jack had to find savings to keep the project viable. The three level above basement development in Mont Albert, a leafy Melbourne suburb was approved with set backs to the upper levels. Tecbeam was the only product with structural capabilities up to the task of carrying the point loads involved without adding steel beams.

Jack undertook the extra design cost of re-engineering to a load bearing structure from the original concrete frame. As a result, he found savings across the apartment structure, as well as significant design efficiencies in the transfer slab over the car park and in the footings, due to the light weight construction. Aware that the buyers were expecting a concrete floor, Jack nominated TecSlab, with Hebel floor panels on the Tecbeam joists to satisfy the ‘feel of concrete’ buyer expectation. The resulting acoustic performance and floor stiffness were exemplary. As a result, the project went ahead to successful completion.

Jack was so impressed with the result that when the opportunity arose, he bought into the company. That was in 2007. Since then Jack has restructured the business, created new international patents and put in place the licensing structure, culminating in the current agreement with Tilling Timber.
